The Board of Directors of the Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona recently announced the recipient of a $2 million Strategic Grant award.

According to Margaret Hepburn, CEO of the Legacy Foundation, "After much deliberation the Legacy Foundation Board of directors selected the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension as the organization to receive a $2 million strategic grant. The grant will be provided over 3 years to support work in the community focused on improving options for healthy eating and active living".

The Legacy Foundation, as a community partner with Cochise Health and Social Services, assisted in completing the Cochise County Health Assessment and the Cochise County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). Healthy Eating, Obesity and Diabetes was one of three top priorities identified as health concerns in Cochise County. In ongoing support of the CHIP, the Legacy Foundation Board made the decision to designate the entire $2 million Strategic Grant towards Healthy Eating, Obesity, and Diabetes.

"The Legacy Foundation is a proud partner in accomplishing the goals set out in the Cochise County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), an initiative being led by Cochise County Department of Health and Social Services”, stated Ms. Hepburn. Additionally, "The Legacy Foundation is very excited to be working alongside the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension and anticipates great progress towards the Legacy Foundation Vision: Southeast Arizona…the health and wellness model for the nation".

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension is working collaboratively with Cochise County Health and Social Services, Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Cochise County Superintendent of Schools and others on this eastern Santa Cruz and Cochise County-wide project.
